The next Basics 1 session is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2025. Typically, a new Basics 1 cohort starts approximately every four to six months, depending on interest.
-
All new students start with the Basics series, even practicing Jyotiṣis. Once we get to know each other better in Basics 1, there may be opportunities to expedite some coursework for those with previous experience. However, most students find that a constant grounding in the basics is essential for deepening their insight and practice, even as they learn more advanced techniques.
-
The Basics program consists of foundational Basics classes, Core Content classes, and interpretive mentorship sessions called Digestions. Students typically complete the program in about a year, with options to accelerate or decelerate studies depending on their individual ability and schedule.
-
No, there is no certification. We do not believe in certifying students as "graduated" or "ready to practice." Jyotiṣa is a lifelong learning journey, not a list of requirements to be completed. A simple certificate cannot encapsulate this inherently boundless discipline, which involves continuous learning and unfolds differently for each person.
-
Students apply the wisdom of their Jyotiṣa training in various ways. Some use it as a reflective practice for personal development, while others integrate it with complementary modalities such as Āyurveda, Yoga, and various forms of counseling. Additionally, some students go on to become professional Jyotiṣa consultants, offering their expertise in individual consultations, and contributing as educators in the field.
-
Not everyone who studies with us chooses to give readings; Jyotiṣa is a beautiful tool for increasing self-knowledge, and we fully support this path! For students who do want to give readings, readiness varies widely. Regardless of where one is in the process, Digestion classes provide mentorship in interpretation at all levels of ability and confidence.
The transition to giving readings is different for each person. Many students start with informal sessions for friends and family, while others may offer donation-based or even paid readings as they gain confidence and experience. The timeline and approach to this progression are unique to each individual.

All classes are conducted live in real-time virtual classrooms, fostering active engagement and participation. We believe in the importance of live attendance for creating dynamic and effective learning environments, surpassing the limitations of pre-recorded videos. Active participation in live sessions is expected in classes.
-
Depending on the length of the overall course, students may miss a certain number of live classes and receive video make-up sessions as follows:
3 or fewer classes: Live attendance is required.
4 to 6 classes: Up to 1 missed class can be made up with a video.
7 to 10 classes: Up to 2 missed classes can be made up with videos.
Each situation is considered individually, and we aim to support students in keeping up with their coursework.
-
We strive to make our online learning environment as effective as possible, similar to traditional teaching. We encourage students to arrive on time, stay for the full session, and join from a location with a stable Wi-Fi connection. To help create a focused and interactive atmosphere, we ask that you keep your video turned on, participate actively when called upon, and engage in discussions. We also suggest minimizing eating and multitasking during the class.
-
Most classes involve some homework or preparation between sessions. For the Basics series, students can expect to spend about 1 to 2 hours per week on homework, in addition to attending class sessions. Homework is crucial for applying what you've learned, receiving feedback, and deepening your understanding. To support this process, volunteer senior student TAs host no-fee Study Group sessions throughout the Basics Class Series.
For intermediate and advanced classes, homework is also required, though the amount may vary somewhat depending on the class content. This is designed to support your studies and ensure continued growth and learning.
